弓張山系から湧き出す湧水が流れる場所に生じた、世界的に見ても特殊な成り立ちの湿原です。このタイプは東海地域に独特のもので、葦毛湿原はその中でも最大の規模を誇り、学術的に希少な場所になっています。水が常に流れているため珍しい植物が多く、北方系の植物と南方系の植物が混在しているのも特徴です。周囲を豊富な自然に囲まれ、湿生植物と乾いた土地に自生する植物とを一緒に観察できます。ミカワバイケイソウやシラタマホシクサに代表される、地域固有の種も見られます。県指定天然記念物。
※平成25年1月～3月に植生回復作業を実施しました。このため場所によっては荒れ地のような状態になっておりますが、ご理解をお願いいたします。
