鉄が酸化した褐鉄鉱という鉱物で、地下水に溶けた鉄分が、水辺に茂るヨシの茎に集まり固まったものです。形や、太さ、長さも様々で、直径30㎝を超えるような大物もあります。高師小僧という名前の由来は、高師原の土が雨で流された後に露出している様子が、幼児や動物に似ていることから名付けられたといわれています。豊橋市の地下資源館や自然史博物館（豊橋総合動植物公園内）にも高師小僧の展示があります。
