文武天皇元（697）年の創建という。貞応元（1222）年鎌倉将軍の命により、鎌倉鶴岡八幡宮を手本にして三方に大門・三池をめぐらし、市杵島社、若宮八幡社、武内社などを勘請した。昭和20（1945）年6月空襲により社殿が被災したが、同24（1949）年再建した。※「ええじゃないか」発祥の地とされている。
※ええじゃないかとは・・・。江戸時代末期～明治初期にかけて東海道・畿内を中心に、江戸から四国に広がった社会現象。（天から御札が降ってくる、これは慶事の前触れだ）という話が広まるとともに、民衆が仮装するなどして囃子言葉のええじゃないか等を連呼しながら集団で町々を巡って熱狂的に踊った。
